The Scrimshaw artist Brian Kiracofe, based in Newport, Rhode Island, will come back to GrayMist! This time, he offers advanced level classes as well as a beginner level.
Students must be at least 14 years old to participate in these classes.

Scrimshaw, the art of engraving on bone or ivory, was a pastime activity by whalers in the 19th century. Brian Kiracofe will guide you through the maritime world of scrimshaw by first carving on a vegetable ivory (a tagua nut) and then on an ancient mammoth ivory.

Class Fee: $ 50.00 (Materials are included)
Enrollment: 6 seats
In this class, Brian will introduce more advanced techniques to work on intricate design. You will first carve on a vegetable ivory (a tagua nut) and then a 1 1/2 round mammoth plate. If you are a Nantucket basket weaver, you can embed your finished artwork on a base with a route for the size.
